Yiskor

Yarzheit | Holidays

Yizkor means remember, and it is at this time that we pray for the ones who we have lost.

A prayer is recited as part of the service during Jewish Holidays four times during the year:

  • Following the Torah and Haftarah readings on Yom Kippur
  • On the last day of Passover
  • On the second day of Shavout
  • On the eighth day of Sukkot (Shemini Atzeret).

One of the most sacred acts Judaism is the observance of Yizkor. Sayings of the Fathers (Pirke Avout), as well as the Talmud speak of the Jewish belief in the eternity of the soul. Additionally it is believed that praying for a departed soul provides great benefit to the souls of the living.
