Yiskor

Yarzheit | Holidays

Yizkor means remember, and it is at this time that we pray for the ones who we have lost.

A prayer is recited as part of the service four times during the year:

  • Following the Torah and Haftarah readings on Yom Kippur
  • On the last day of Passover
  • On the second day of Shavout
  • On the eighth day of Sukkot (Shemini Atzeret).

This is based on the Jewish belief in the eternity of the soul. Although a soul cannot perform good deeds or charitable acts, it is believed that praying for them can benefit the souls of the living.
